Knife found in Grangemouth tot’s toy box

A mum was shocked to discover a razor sharp craft knife inside the packaging of her three-year-old son’s new toy.
Laura Muir (30) told The Falkirk Herald it was pure luck she discovered the potentially lethal implement before little Jay did.
She wants to know how the tool - a blade housed in a plastic covering - ended up where it did and is still waiting for answers from Smyths toy store.
Laura purchased the ‘Jake and the Neverland Pirates’ toy ship from the store in Falkirk’s Central Retail Park and the craft knife lay undiscovered in the packaging for a couple of days at the family’s house in Poplar Street, Grangemouth.
Laura could not believe her eyes when she started wrapping the box for Jay’s Christmas.
“The knife just fell out,” she said. “I’m thankful I found it and not Jay. God knows what could have happened if he had been left alone to play with his toys on Christmas Day.
“The blade was sticking out from the covering.”
Smyths in Falkirk said they could not comment on the matter but the firm’s head office, based in Galway, Ireland, confirmed that the issue was being looked into.
A spokesman said: “Smyths Toys Superstores takes any complaint very seriously and conducts a thorough investigation. We are still endeavoring to determine how such an object could have found its way inside the packaging of a toy.”
