It’s time Falkirk honoured swimming hero Bobby

Falkirk Flyer Bobby McGregor could finally be recognised by his former home town.

As the fanfare around London 2012 calms down, a call has come to honour the district’s greatest Olympian – almost half a century after he gained a swimming silver medal in the Tokyo games.

Bobby, who broke the world freestyle record FIVE times in his illustrious career, missed out on gold by a fingertip at the 1964 Olympics.

Although crowds poured out to welcome him back to his then family home in Bantaskine Street and a small presentation took place in the local primary school, there was never any major recognition of his remarkable achievement.

But that could change after Councillor Dennis Goldie approached Provost Pat Reid with the suggestion the time was right to finally mark the swimmer’s efforts.

Provost Reid said: “It is certainly an idea that I would like to take forward and will speak with the council to look at what we can do. He was a world-class swimmer who made Falkirk proud.”

See the FH100 Sport supplement in this week’s Falkirk Herald to find out more about Bobby’s outstanding career.
