Scottish airports were forced to rely on fuel reserves after the safety of petroleum products supplied by Grangemouth-based Ineos was called into question.

Edinburgh and Glasgow airports were both affected by the situation on Monday, with some Easyjet flights from Edinburgh having to make previously unscheduled fuelling stops on their journeys as a result.

Speaking on Monday, a spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said: “There has been a shortage of aircraft fuel across Scottish airports yesterday and today caused by quality issues at Petroineos’ Grangemouth refinery which has meant we have had to ration our supplies.

“However, there has been no disruption to services at Edinburgh Airport, and normal fuel supplies have now resumed.”

Ineos stated safety concerns over its jet fuel led to it temporarily stopping deliveries to the airports.

A spokesman said: “Last Thursday morning, Petroineos identified an issue with one of the refinery processes necessary to produce a component of jet fuel. The company resolved this issue restarted deliveries to airports in Scotland.

“Safety is our highest priority. As part of our normal operating procedure all fuel is tested to ensure it meets stringent specifications prior to certification and delivery from the site.

“Only fuel that fully meets this specification can be delivered from the refinery. The Grangemouth refinery has reliably provided fuel to Scotland’s airports without extended interruption, due to technical issues, for more than 10 years.

“It is exceptional to encounter an issue that has lasted longer than the company’s contingency stock. Petroineos apologise for any issue or concern that this issue has caused Scotland’s airports or its passengers.

“A full review is being carried out into the causes and future prevention of this issue.”
