High Street store is to be given facelift

ONE of the mainstays of Falkirk High Street is to get a long-awaited facelift.

A major refurbishment will give Marks & Spencer a new spring look and bring it into line with the group’s other Scottish stores.

The High Street department store is one of the oldest in the UK’s chain not to have had a renovation, but all that will change when plans get underway in the coming months.

A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer said: “We can confirm that M & S in Falkirk is to undergo modernisation with a refresh of the store.

“We look forward to unveiling the exciting plans for the restyled store in the coming weeks.”

The development was revealed at the latest meeting of Falkirk Council’s Licensing Board.

The store was given permission to extend its opening hours on a Sunday and make a change to where alcohol is displayed in the store.

Sharon Hamilton, who was representing Marks and Spencer, explained that the liquor would be displayed in three bins in one area and would not lead to opportunistic purchasing of alcohol.

She said: “Marks & Spencer doesn’t pile them high and sell them cheap like their competitors.

“The alcohol will be kept in one area in a far corner of the store.

“Falkirk is also one of the last stores to undergo a refurbishment and it is hoped that a refurbishment will start in March.

“M & S is one the few retailers looking to refurbish and stay in the high street and not move to an out-of-town retail park.”

This week, Alastair Mitchell, Falkirk’s BID manager said he welcomed the investment from one of the town’s big hitters.

He said: “It’s great to see a major high street brand making this level of commitment to our town centre.”
