Grangemouth’s Graeme gets to work on chair

A furniture restoration student has proved to be a shining example.

Graeme Weddell (49) was given the task of making over the boardroom chair of Smith & Rodger Ltd, the firm which supplies the Forth Valley College course with polish.

The former engineer from Grangemouth used the company’s own products to bring the chair back to life.

Graeme decided to re-train in furniture restoration after growing tired of the engineering industry.

He said: “I think I used all the skills I have been taught in restoring that chair and they all came in very handy.

“As an engineer I felt I had done everything in the industry that I wanted to and so turned to furniture restoration.

“I am now looking forward to starting up my own workshop when I leave and can’t wait.”

Ian McAslan, owner of Glasgow-based Smith & Rodger, said: “The chair had been in our boardroom for nearly 50 years and certainly needed some time spent cleaning it up.

“I didn’t expect too much, but it is fair to say I am very impressed with the work Graeme has done.

“I’m particularly pleased with the small historical features on the chair that he left alone as they did not need to be touched.”

The Victorian secretary chair has now once again taken pride of place in the boardroom of the business – one of the biggest suppliers of wood finishes in the country.

Forth Valley College’s HND in furniture restoration is one of its most popular courses.

It covers subjects including upholstery, veneering and cabinet making as well as business skills needed to start up a company or work self employed.

The course is now full but the college will accept applications from October for 2012.
