Forth Valley youths have ‘fascination’ with setting fires
Sixteen youngsters have been referred to an intervention scheme for having a “fascination” with setting fires.
The youths and their families from the Forth Valley area have been made to attend meetings with fire chiefs who work with them to try and curtail their dangerous and reckless behaviour.
The meetings will continue until officers see an improvement in their attitude towards the dangers of starting fires.
If there’s no progress after six months the youths’ behaviour will continue to be monitored.
Chief fire officer Kenneth Taylor told this month’s Central Scotland Joint Fire and Rescue Board: “We have been working with young people who seem to have a fascination with fire.
“Our community safety personnel will continue to engage in proactive work to help prevent this type of behaviour in our communities.
“There has been a lot of good work done in community safety activity throughout the last six-month period, which includes engaging with young people in schools and clubs and distributing leaflets and intervention measures.”
A further five youths between the ages of 12 and 16 were referred to Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service for their attitudes towards setting fires as part of the service’s ASKS (Act Safe Keep Safe) campaign.
They took part in activities like visiting Polmont YOI, alcohol and drug awareness, learning the consequences of fire and hose drills which are designed to divert them away from fire setting.
