Falkirk wedding stopped by Border Agency

The prospective groom overstayed his visa

The prospective groom overstayed his visa

A wedding at Falkirk Registrar’s Office was stopped after UK Border Agency officers stepped in and arrested a guest.

The 31-year-old Nigerian had travelled from London to be a witness at the ceremony last Thursday but was detained after a tip-off.

It is understood the agency is now making arrangements for the man, who had overstayed his visa, to be sent back to his homeland. Officers are also making further enquiries about the prospective groom’s immigration status. He is a 32-year-old Nigerian who had been expecting to tie the knot with his 25-year-old Hungarian bride.

Anna Beattie, from the UK Border Agency in Scotland, said: “This operation shows that it does not matter where in the UK you travel, if you are here illegally and seeking to evade our immigration laws you can expect to be found by us and removed. We work with colleagues at registration offices throughout Scotland and receive intelligence from a wide variety of sources. We will not hesitate to act against those who mistakenly believe that they can abuse the immigration system.”
