Falkirk to host meeting on independence
Politician Dennis Canavan and author Alan Bissett will speak at the meeting
A pro-independence meeting takes place in Falkirk next week.
Supporters of the Yes campaign, which advocates Scotland should separate itself from the rest of the UK, will meet in Falkirk Old and St Modan’s Parish Church on Monday to consider promoting the 2014 referendum.
Speakers will include former MSP and MP Dennis Canavan and Hallglen author Alan Bissett.
Chairing the event, which begins at 7.30 p.m. and is open to the public, will be Falkirk MSP Michael Matheson.
Mr Canavan, who is chairman of the Yes Scotland Advisory Board, recently spoke at the independence march and rally in Edinburgh, where he described his experiences as a Labour MP at Westminster and independent MSP at Holyrood.
Mr Matheson said: “The independence campaign in Falkirk is attracting not just supporters of the SNP, but from across the political spectrum and those with no party political affiliations.
“The mechanics of the referendum are now complete and the debate now is about where decisions on Scotland’s future are best taken, Edinburgh or London.”
Last week, First Minister Alex Salmond and Prime Minister David Cameron signed a historic agreement to allow the vote to go ahead in autumn 2014.
There will be a single Yes/No question on Scotland leaving the UK, and it will also allow 16 and 17-year-olds to take part in the ballot.
