Falkirk pupils learn about the Scots tongue

PROUD pupils have been given a lesson in their roots as they embrace their native tongue.

Nethermains Primary, along with other schools in the area, have encouraged children to speak in the Scots language.

Head teacher Mary Connolly said: "For many of our pupils, the Scots language is their first language at home, so we've tried to incorporate

that into the classroom.

''We have been working with Scots author Matthew Fitt and and we have found that it has had a really good effect on the pupils, especially the boys who have been really interested in reading some of the Scots texts.

"We use a bi-lingual approach. Not all our classes are in Scots so we do still use the English language.

''But, if a pupil gives us an answer in Scots during an English speaking class, we would never say to them not to speak like that.

''We would say it's a good answer but ask them what would it would be in English?"
