Red-faced school bosses had to send a taxi to pick up a pupil at Edinburgh Castle – after he was left behind on a class outing.

The unfortunate fourth year boy failed to get on the bus when it returned to Graeme High last Wednesday. However, teachers in charge got their sums wrong and set off home.

When the pupil realised he’d been abandoned, he alerted staff at the castle, who in turn contacted the school.

Lesley Carroll, Graeme High School rector, said: “At the end of the visit, the school group met at the war memorial and a headcount was taken. All were present at that time.

“A second headcount was taken on the bus but was inaccurate. Although the pupil was in no danger at any time, new procedures are now in place and a roll call will be carried out once pupils are on the bus as a final check.

“The school contacted the pupil’s parents as soon as they were aware of the situation. They then kept in regular contact with Edinburgh Castle, the taxi company and the pupil’s mother until the pupil arrived home safely.”
