Falkirk leads the world with new recycling plant
FALKIRK will become the world leader in recycling thanks to a unique plant which will turn our rubbish into useable material.
And an added bonus to cash-strapped Falkirk Council will be an annual saving of up to 1 million in landfill tax.
Avondale Environmental in Polmont is to open the mechanical biological treatment facility which takes the waste currently going into tips and turns it into a compost-like material, which could be used in soil or burned to produce more energy.
In a landfill, waste can take more than a decade to decompose but, with the new technology, the cycle can take as little as 18 days.
The facility, at the existing Avondale site, will be partially operational by the end of the year and fully opened by 2011, creating up to 40 jobs.
Falkirk Council will be the first customers, allowing it to reduce its waste going into landfill to just 10-15 per cent.
Already Falkirk has one of the most comprehensive recycling schemes in the country with separate bins for garden waste, paper and plastic, and rubbish for landfills. A box for glass, textiles and electrical goods has just been launched, meaning 42 per cent of all household rubbish is recycled.
