Falkirk girls in running for top awards ... and your votes

Two Falkirk girls have been nominated for accolades in the prestigious Scottish Variety Awards.
Athletics’ Jade Nimmo and budding politician Rae Cahill have just been shortlisted for the awards which will be announced next month.
Hallglen’s Jade (21) is in the running for the up-and-coming Scottish sports person, while 21-year-old Rae Cahill is in contention in the up-and-coming young politician category.
Both girls are over the moon at getting this far and are looking forward to the glitzy award ceremony at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on March 23.
Jade said: “I’m really delighted to be put forward for an award like this.
“I was nominated through Sports Aid, and I know that, judging by the other people who have been nominated in this category, it’s going to be a big event.”
Long jumper Jade, who carried the Olympic Torch in Falkirk in June, was also celebrating this week after winning the women’s Scottish Senior Pentathlon event in Glasgow on Sunday.
She said: “I wanted a different focus for indoor competitions, and my body is definitely feeling it!
“I have to qualify for the Commonwealth Games soon, but being nominated for this award is great, I’m really happy.”
Former St Mungo’s High School pupil Rae Cahill is a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP) for Glasgow Kelvin.
She previously was an MSYP for Falkirk East during her last year at school before going to university in Glasgow.
Rae was formerly the chairperson of the Falkirk Schools Council, and vice-chairperson of the Scottish Youth Parliament. She is a keen political activist with a background in campaigning and engaging with young people, and represented the SYP at the first UK Youth Parliament debate in the House of Commons.
She represented Scotland at the World Youth Congress 2010 in Turkey as one of three Scottish UK Young Ambassadors.
MSYP Rae said: “I’m delighted to be nominated as Scotland’s Best Up and Coming Young Politician.
“What I think is most important is that events such as the Variety Award provide an opportunity to show the impact young people can make, both to their community and also to Scotland.”
The winners of the Scottish Variety Awards will be determined by an online public vote which is being hosted on the Capital FM website. Voting is now open and runs until March 8.
