Falkirk Delivers is already managing to produce the goods
Keep Scotland Beautiful judges and Falkirk Delivers staff check out the appearance of the shopping area
The people responsible for managing Falkirk town centre have had their hard work recognised.
Falkirk Delivers was honoured by Scotland’s leading charity for the environment in recognition of its efforts to enhance the appearance of the district’s main shopping area.
Keep Scotland Beautiful named it the best new Business Improvement District (BID) at a ceremony in Motherwell on September 11.
Falkirk Delivers, formerly known as Falkirk BID, works alongside Falkirk Council and local businesses to promote the town centre, and deliver initiatives to encourage people to work and shop in the area.
Competition judges visited the town last month to inspect its progress in three main categories – horticultural achievement, environmental responsibilty and community participation.
Falkirk was one of 52 communities from across Scotland to take part in the competition.
Alastair Mitchell, Falkirk Delivers manager, said: “We are thrilled to have won the inaugural BIDs category in the Beautiful Scotland awards. We work closely with many partners in delivering an attractive and clean town centre, and this award celebrates all the work we undertake together.”
During the past year, Falkirk Delivers has planted hanging baskets, run an anti-chewing gum campaign with Keep Scotland Beautiful, worked with Falkirk Friends of the Earth to plant a herb garden and community vegetable plot in orphan spaces, and has employed a dedicated team of people to tackle anti-social behaviour, weeds and odd jobs around the town centre.
Derek Robertson, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “The campaign celebrates the work of communities, from cities to villages, who pull together to improve and enhance their local areas. The awards presented at this ceremony go some way to recognising all the endless hours which volunteers and local authorities put in throughout the year to ensure that visitors and local community members are able to enjoy clean, green and sustainable surroundings.”
