Falkirk has topped the league for reducing carbon emissions

Falkirk Council has reduced its carbon emissions further than any other local authority in Scotland.

Five years ago, the council signed up to the Scottish Climate Change Declaration along with all 32 local authority areas in the country in a bid to tackle global warming.

Falkirk has made an area wide reduction of 17 per cent from 2005 figures - far exceeding the Scottish average of 12 per cent and placing it 10th in the UK council table for reducing carbon emissions.

Councillor Dr Craig R. Martin, convener of the environment and community safety committee, said: “We’ve come a long way in a short space of time.

“Climate change cannot be ignored, it’s happening and we see its effects on a daily basis. As a large organisation we can take the lead, show that by making small changes in the way we deliver our services by cutting carbon emissions but also making sure our services are resilient to severe weather events by having robust contingency plans in place.”
