Falkirk Council wants to build new houses and invest in its stock

A multi-million pound scheme to upgrade housing stock has been approved by councillors.

And they’re ready to invest millions more building 40 new homes.

Hundreds of tenants will benefit from improvements to their properties thanks to a £2.3 million ‘cash splash’ agreed this week.

Over £1 million has been earmarked to install high efficiency central heating systems in nearly 500 houses across the district including Hallglen, Bonnybridge, Denny, Dunipace, Banknock and Camelon while 131 others in Bonnybridge, Larbert, Stenhousemuir and Carronshore will have new roughcasting and roofing work carried out at a cost of £1.3 million.

The contracts were approved when the policy and resourceas committee met on Tuesday.

The central heating replacement will be carried out by McTear Contracts Limited of Wishaw while the roughcasting and roofing schemes will be tackled by the council’s in-house corporate and neighbourhood services division.

Convener Craig Martin, said: “We have an ongoing programme of works that will ensure our tenants have a safe and warm environment in which to live. This investment will ensure our properties also meet the national standards set for the coming years.”

The meeting also agreed that, subject to planning permission being granted on November 28, corporate and neighbourhood services will be awarded the £4.3 million contract to build 40 council houses at Parkhall Drive in Maddiston which are expected to be completed by April 2014.

The development will consist of 32 two and three-bedroom flats, 14 of which will be accessible ground floor properties. The remaining eight will be a mix of three and four bedroom terraced homes.
