Face of Falkirk is a winner for Strathcarron
Face of Falkirk Kayleigh Harley presents our cheque to Strathcarron's Jim Brown
The coffers of one of the area’s best loved charities have been topped up thanks to The Falkirk Herald.
Our Face of Falkirk event, held in The Beancross last month, raised £1200 for Strathcarron Hospice.
And our first Face of Falkirk, Maddiston schoolgirl Kayleigh Harley, was delighted to hand over a cheque to the Fankerton hospice.
The 17-year-old Braes High School pupil only entered the Falkirk Herald competition because she wanted to fundraise for the charity.
Kayleigh, who is in sixth year and a house captain, said: “It was an honour to hand over the cheque and know that the money will do so much good work for local people.”
The Face of Falkirk saw nine finalists take to the stage to model outfits from Zuri Boutique, New Look and their own wardrobes.
Our judging panel - Falkirk Herald editor Colin Hume, professional model Lucie Stevenson, Howgate marketing manager Margaret Foy and Graeme Hamilton from hair and beauty salon Couper and Co - had a tough job.
But in the end they chose Kayleigh as the first ever Face of Falkirk and the winner of a professional photoshoot and make over.
Kayleigh added: “Strathcarron Hospice needs close to £70,000 every week in donations just to continue operating so every single penny matters.
“My uncle’s best friend recently passed away at the hospice and my great gran was there too, so I know how great the facility is. But visiting to hand over the cheque was the first time I had been inside. I was really impressed, it looks like a swanky hotel and nothing like I imagined it to look like.’’
The teenager is determined to fundraise for the hospice and is now planning a skydive in the new year – despite her mum’s disapproval.
Fundraiser Jim Brown collected the cheque on behalf of Strathcarron Hospice.
He said: “We can’t thank The Falkirk Herald enough for choosing the hospice as the beneficiary of the Face of Falkirk.
“We rely on donations so that we can treat 25 people every day and provide a service that isn’t available anywhere else.
“We are glad Kayleigh was impressed with the facilities on offer and has pledged to continue fundraising. “Every penny raised goes to pay for special palliative care for local people.”
