Plans to demolish a former police station have angered residents keen to preserve what little remains of a town’s built heritage.
Falkirk Council wants to flatten the building in Broad Street, Denny, which was formerly home to the Denny sub-area command of Central Scotland Police.
The station closed two years ago when a new purpose-built police office opened in Larbert.
Denny town centre is currently undergoing a major transformation as part of a long-awaited project to demolish the now dilapidated Church Walk flats.
Many of the area’s historic buildings were demolished 40 years ago when Church Walk was originally built.
It has left some residents feeling more should be done to preserve the remaining buildings of interest.
Marjorie Delaney of Denny and Dunipace Heritage Society said: “We strongly object to the proposed demolition of the old Denny police station. It is a building of character and one that is held in high esteem by people in the town.
“Denny has lost a lot of its built heritage and we need to keep what’s left.
“Whilst we understand that the building cannot continue to lie empty, we would urge the council to explore other options which could retain at least the facade.
“There is a lot of modern extensions to the rear of the building which are of no importance. These could be demolished to make way for any future housing development.”
Councillor John McNally said: “I was shocked when I heard the entire building is to be demolished. It was my understanding that a plan was being considered which would have converted it into flats.”
A council spokesman said that plans for the future use of the site were still to be finalised.
Meanwhile, plans have also been submitted to build two shops and two flats at 5 Broad Street as part of a private development.
