Deal done to save bakery
WORKERS at a crisis-hit bakery were celebrating this week after all 340 jobs appeared to be saved.
The axe had hung over the workforce at Larbert-based Mathiesons since early March when the company went into administration.
But on Monday came the good news that three established figures in the Scottish food industry had stepped in to create a new firm, Mathiesons Foods Ltd, which will be one of the largest independent bakery businesses in the country.
And the icing on the cake for the local workers, who are employed in 22 high street shops and six restaurant cafes, is that it looks likely the new firm will retain Larbert as its headquarters and bakery, ensuring jobs are saved in this area. Directors are currently reviewing how best to merge the three companies.
Welcoming the news, Falkirk Council leader Councillor Craig Martin said: "We are delighted that local jobs have been saved and that a famous local name is going to continue."
