Crowds flock to Falkirk model rail exhibition

Crowds once again flocked to what has become a staple entry in the family calendar last weekend as Falkirk Model Railway Club held its annual exhibition.

The event at Forth Valley College over Saturday and Sunday is growing more popular by the year with visitors, enthusiasts, families or anyone who appreciates a skillful craft.

There were a few new displays as ever this year including the Hogwarts Express from Harry Potter, Thomas the Tank Engine and a mythical one called ‘Graemeston Quay’ dedicated to former member Graeme Robertson who died of a brain tumour.

The showstopper was an individual effort called St George’s Quay by an entrant from Newcastle.

Exhibition co-ordinator Ron Young said: “The St George’s Quay was just a stunning display.

“It won our prestigious Kerr Trophy for individual display, the Cornwell Trophy and the Exhibitors’ Cup which is voted for by all the experts who exhibited.

“The Kerr Trophy is voted for by people who attend the exhibition so it shows just how popular it was.

“It’s the first time anyone has ever won three trophies at our exhibition, but it was well deserved as it was a great individual effort.

“He had engines running around a quayside with old boats and stuff in a harbour.”

Some of the displays can cost up to £10,000 and take up to a year to complete. On the day they take three hours just to set them up.

Club member John Mundie celebrated his 70th birthday at the event and was given an expensive engine from one of the traders.

Mr Young added: “We were well up with our numbers again this year which is very good considering there are quite a lot of clubs whose numbers have gone down, so it’s onwards and upwards and hopefully we can build on the success we’ve had.”
