Canal project boosted by funding package
Millions of pounds are being ploughed into the canal network
A floating village could be launched in Grangemouth thanks to a multi-million pound investment in Scotland’s canals.
The Scottish Government has pledged to invest a further £4.6 million in the waterways infrastructure over the next two years. This is in addition to £10 million grant-in-aid already announced for Scottish Canals.
It is expected it could create around 80 jobs and bring forward projects to impact on tourism, regeneration, sport and living on the water.
Grangemouth could benefit from the provision of residential moorings with facilities for people on houseboats as part of the Living on Water initiative.
Welcoming the investment, Steve Dunlop, Scottish Canals chief executive, said: “This major investment by the Scottish Government gives us an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact on the local communities where we operate, attract significant tourism into Scotland, create jobs and stimulate business growth that will benefit the wider Scottish economy.
“We plan to build on the tremendous success of the past decade and this funding will be used to advance a wide range of highly ambitious, yet achievable, projects that will take Scotland’s canals forward into a bright new future.”
Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “Scotland’s canals provide a stunning setting for water-based leisure activity – supporting tourism, educational opportunities and the economy.
“Continued investment has led to local communities gaining pride in their canals.”
