Bonnybridge councillor stages Diageo protest

Councillor Billy Buchanan says Diageo is responsible for the black mould problem in the area

Councillor Billy Buchanan says Diageo is responsible for the black mould problem in the area

A councillor has staged a one-man protest outside a bonded warehouse he claims is making nearby residents’ lives a misery.

William Buchanan spent Monday outside the Diageo facility in Bonnybridge.

He says that evaporating alcohol from the site is the cause of the infamous black mould which grows on many properties in the area.

The independent councillor is calling on the Scottish Government to intervene and resolve an issue that has been on-going for more than a decade.

He said: “Diageo has recently announced significant investment in its Scottish operations, but meanwhile the problem in Bonnybridge has not gone away and is getting worse.

“The black mould growing on people’s houses reappaears as soon as it is cleaned - no one around here is in any doubt about what causes it.

“The fungus action group that was set-up several years came to nothing. It’s time that someone stood up to Diageo.”

A Diageo spokesman said: “As an industry committed to the highest standards of environmental responsibility, there is continual research into our processes.

“This research has found a complex range of naturally occurring microflora at warehouse sites and that the same microflora is present widely across the environment in the UK.

“No direct association between ethanol and microflora was found. Instead, the microflora appears to grow wherever the prevailing environmental conditions (such as light, moisture, temperature, nutrients) support that growth.

“If there is a change to the scientific evidence, we can assure you that the industry would consider what the most appropriate, proportionate and effective way forward might be.”
