Block coming down in Denny

Work is to resume on demolishing Church Walk as part of an on-going project to breathe new life into Denny town centre.

The block facing St Alexander’s Church in Stirling Street will be the next to bite the dust, with contractors arriving to begin prepatory work on site in the coming days.

William Hill bookmakers, which occupied 143 Church Walk, was the last business to vacate the building when it closed on Tuesday.

The demolition is expected to last around six-eight weeks.

Work bringing down the opposite end of Church Walk, facing Duke Street, has finished for the time being, with only the exposed gable end needing to be covered.

The remainder of the building, which has dominated Denny town centre since it was first built 40 years ago, will be flattened when Falkirk Council completes its on-going process of buying the remaining commercial units that are still privately owned.

The Falkirk Herald revealed last year Falkirk Council’s latest plans to kick-start the much delayed regeneration project, following the collapse of a previous partnership with developers Henry Boot.

Once Church Walk is cleared, a new building with space for nine shops and a library will be erected beside a new public square facing Denny Cross.

The remainder of the site will be soft-lanscaped in the short-term and marketed for future private development.

Extensive car parking will also be added next to Davies Row.

A council spokesman said: “There is already a significant change to the way the town centre looks and this is to be continued in the New Year as demolition of Block D (opposite St Alexander’s Church) commences.

“Falkirk Council has commenced the planning application process for the new town centre and looks forward to receiving community feedback and comments on the town centre masterplan, in addition to the detailed plans for phase one.”
