Bin pick-up changes leaves Falkirk residents confused

Too many changes to the schedule are being blamed for the confusion

Too many changes to the schedule are being blamed for the confusion

A Falkirk community was left wheelie mad after putting the wrong bins out yesterday, forcing an apology from the council.

Residents in a number of streets in the Bainsford and Langlees areas say they did not receive updates to changes in refuse collection dates, resulting in them putting their green bins out instead of the blue ones this week.

Councillor Cecil Meiklejohn also believes the number of alterations Falkirk Council has made to the schedule has added to the confusion.

She said: “There were a lot of areas in Langlees and Bainsford that were in absolute confusion over the collection. This follows three changes to collection dates since March.

“Residents also told me they had not been advised of the most recent change which is why a lot of people put the wrong bins out.

“It seems like the two different departments – food waste and refuse – are working against each other instead of with each other. There is different information coming out of them.”

Changes to the regular collection had to change in some areas after the introduction of the small food waste bins at the end of March.

New calendars were sent out by the council, but were followed by other letters highlighting further changes which residents in and around Lomond Drive claim they didn’t receive.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “The council said it posted them through doors, but the whole street can’t be wrong.”

Falkirk Council has apologised to residents for any confusion.

A spokesman said: “Some improvements are being made to the existing refuse collection and in some cases this meant a change of day to householders. A leaflet was produced detailing these changes that related solely to the green, brown and blue bins.

“Due to the need to constantly provide best value services and efficient routes, it is important to regularly update collection rounds. In this case there have been several changes close together, which has been unfortunately necessary and we apologise to those affected.”
