Banknock youth drowns in loch

TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular teenager who drowned in a tragic accident last week.

John Hixon, of Banknock, died on Thursday in Banton Loch, Kilsyth.

The 18–year–old had been swimming with four pals when he got into difficulties.

Emergency services were called to the scenejust before 4 p.m. and John's friends were all rescued - one from an island in the middle of the loch.

A major rescue operation was carried out to find John and a Royal Navy helicopter was scrambled to help with the search.

The teenager's body was eventually recovered at 7.35 p.m. by divers

from Strathclyde Police's underwater search unit.
