A supermarket giant has begun a £48,000 undertaking to plant trees in an attempt to offset the impact its massive new distribution depot had on the area.

Asda, which opened the new facility in Earls Road last November after cutting down scores of trees, is providing funding for Falkirk Council to carry out the project, which was scheduled to see £5900 worth of planting work begin in Dalgrain Road this week.

According to Phillip Harris, senior planning officer at the council’s development services, Zetland Park will receive £30,000 of the funding to put trees in place between autumn this year and next spring.

Primary schools in the area will receive a total allocation of £6000 to install eco gardens and trees during the year, while a plan is being developed for Rannoch Park, which is earmarked for £5000 of work to replace lost trees in autumn/spring 2014-15.

The town’s Scottish Wildlife Trust Jupiter Centre, near Wood Street, will receive £960 to carry out habitat improvement planting.

Mr Harris said: “We have also researched a number of other sites that have been suggested and these have not proved suitable for planting due to ground conditions, the presence of underground utilities or not being under council control.”
