Airth pub bosses vow to make changes
The management of a village pub has been issued with a warning by Falkirk Council’s licensing board.
Forbes Dewar and Sandra Burden had their licences endorsed following a meeting last week.
Councillors were asked to review the licence of the Elphinstone Inn in Airth by Central Scotland Police following a violent altercation at around 8 p.m. Sunday, September 30 in which one customer was attacked by another.
Officers were concerned that no one from the pub had reported the incident by the time officers arrived shortly after 9 p.m., after being alerted by the victim.
Mr Dewar explained to the board that he was the personal licence holder of the bar, but that it was ultimately owned by Hannigan Hotels Limited.
It was revealed that the owners were only informed of the incident in December, 10 days before the board meeting.
Mr Dewar added that he was not present on the evening of the incident, and that Ms Burden was in charge. He claimed that he only learned of what had happened the following day, and had presumed that the incident had been “dealt with”.
Mrs Burden said that she had been busy dealing with the aftermath of the incident and that she had asked another member of staff to report it to the police.
Convener Malcolm Nicoll said: “I find it incredible that a serious allegation like this was not immediately made aware to the licence holder or the owner.”
Councillors criticised the lack of communication between the bar’s management and the length of time it took before the incident was reported to the police.
Mr Dewar said: “Written procedures will be put in place. Things will change and I will take a more active role in the pub from now on.”
nOn November 21, Thomas Monaghan appeared at Falkirk Sheriff Court, pled guilty to assault and was jailed for 16 months.
