£5m bill to renew Falkirk centre
The Falkirk Steeple
The final bill to transform Falkirk Town Centre could top £5 million councillors have been told.
Massive improvements to shopping areas and historic buildings including the Falkirk Steeple will be delivered if a funding bid is approved by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
It has already agreed a £2 million grant to boost Falkirk Council’s Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) - the largest award to any town in Scotland.
Now the council is to move ahead with the second stage of an ambitious scheme to regenerate traditional town centre areas.
The initiative aims to:
nImprove the town centre conservation area through repair and reinstatement work;
nProvide owners cash to improve shop fronts;
nIdentify empty properties to bring back into economic use.
Newmarket Street, Kirk Wynd, The Steeple, Cow Wynd and the East end of the High Street are all targets for a money-spinning makeover. There will be cash too for training programmes to kick start construction and traditional skills and learning activities to promote and tell the ‘Falkirk Story’ within the community.
