£10m Falkirk housing lift

Tenants throughout the Falkirk area will soon feel the benefit of the millions of pounds being pouring into social housing.
At a meeting of Falkirk Council’s policy and resources committee members agreed £8 million plans to build a total of 80 new properties in Falkirk and Maddiston and proposals to invest £2 million to improve the council’s housing stock.
Work has already begun on the new social rented properties for Merchiston Road in Falkirk and work will start later this month in Parkhall Drive, Maddiston.
Council leader Craig Martin said: “There is a lack of affordable social housing for rent across Falkirk. However, with these and other similar building programmes, we are providing new properties that will be eagerly sought after.”
In Falkirk, the project, which is built on the former St Mungo’s High School, is the first of two phases of development on the site and will provide 40 homes, comprising of 36 two and three bedroomed flats and four larger three/four bedroomed terraced houses with a total value of £3.91 million.
The Maddiston project will provide 40 homes of 32 two and three bedroomed flats in addition to eight larger three/four bedroomed terraced houses at a total value of £4.04 million.
Both projects should be completed by April next year.
SNP Group Leader, Councillor Cecil Meiklejohn welcomed the new builds but felt the council could be doing a lot more.
She said: “We are delighted the SNP Government has recognised the importance of council housing and not only changed the legislation to build new housing but also provided Falkirk Council with millions of pounds in grant funding.
“So far the current Labour/Tory council administration have failed to match the SNP Government’s ambition with anything other than small scale developments.”
Meanwhile, more than 600 properties throughout the area will be receiving gas heating replacements costing £1.1 million and new roofing and roughcasting work totalling over £776,000 in order to help them become warmer and more energy efficient.
Councillor Martin, convener of policy and resources, said: “This is an extremely significant investment that will improve properties throughout the whole Falkirk Council area.”
