Vale of Carron Rotary Club President Jill Dewar welcomed members and guest Martin Nichol, Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Larbert, to the Plough Hotel, Stenhousemuir. Following a lively meal Martin introduced us to an extraordinary character, Eddie Chapman 1914 - 1997, an English criminal and wartime spy who offered his services to Nazi Germany as a traitor and spy, subsequently becoming a double agent. His British Secret Service handlers code named him ZigZag due to his erratic personal history. After a dishonourable discharge from the Coldstream Guards Chapman had turned to a life of petty crime to fund gambling debts and a taste for fine alcohol. A spell in prison taught him safe breaking and the use of gelignite, leading him towards serious crime. Incarceration in the occupied Channel Islands and France ended with training as a German spy. Martin developed the tale of Eddie Chapman as he committed acts of sabotage against the British, began to work for MI5 and went back to train German spies. It was then the title of Martin’s talk, ‘Hero or Villain?’ began to make sense. Rotarian David Paton PHF thanked Martin on behalf of the club for his rousing and astonishing true story. If you are interested in joining Rotary or learning more about us contact Joe on 07849 197330 or visit our club website. Please also follow us on Twitter @ValeofCarron and on Facebook.
