President Martin Nicol welcomed members and guests from Vale of Carron and Falkirk Rotary Clubs to last Wednesday’s meeting at Carmuirs Golf Club. After dinner, President Martin introduced the evenings speaker, Gillian Niven, a member of Soroptimist International Falkirk. During Summer 2013, Gillian and a colleague took on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Accompanied by a party of guides, porters and caterers, Gillian and her colleague undertook the six day trek by following the Rongai route, one of seven recognised routes to the summit. Despite months of preparation to ensure that they were properly equipped and physically capable of undertaking the climb, Gillian used slides to illustrate how difficult the endeavour proved to be. After enduring freezing cold temperatures and very basic toilet facilities, arrival at the summit represented a real achievement, as well as a sense of relief. The money raised from the climb was split between the Maternity Unit at Mukono Health Centre and Strathcarron Hospice. After a very informative talk and slideshow that enthralled those in attendance, Martin Scott gave the vote of thanks. Next weeks meeting will take the form of a club outing in support of Larbert High School by attending their Summer production of ‘Fame’. Thanks to everyone who attended or supported the successful fundraising event held in the Dobbie Hall last Saturday evening. Abba Tribute band Swede Dreamz, played to a full house and entertained the packed audience with covers of all of Abba’s biggest hits. The sum of £2000 was raised in aid of Strathcarron Hospice.
