President Jill Dewar welcomed members and guests Assistant Governor Agnes Ritchie; Larbert Rotary President Ronnie Laing; Elizabeth Ball, volunteer and Talks Secretary with Falkirk and Central Scotland Branch of The Samaritans and President Elect Peter Mehta from Stirling Rotary, also a Samaritan, to a meeting of the Rotary Club of Vale of Carron. After enjoying a meal and fellowship Elizabeth gave a brief but effective presentation of the organisation which began in 1953 as an idea of Chad Varah. Anyone who needs to can call, email, text, write or talk face-to-face and a trained volunteer will respond. The emphasis is on the caller talking and the volunteer listening; exploring thoughts and feelings rather than details. It is a confidential, non-religious service and while other agencies may be suggested all decisions are the caller’s. One can talk over any problem and often this helps. Elizabeth said most callers were not suicidal but had a range of troubles. Peter and Elizabeth have voluntary experience of 45 years between them with The Samaritans. A wide range of questions followed before President Jill gave a warm vote of thanks. Assistant District Governor Agnes spoke of her pleasure in visiting Vale of Carron and mentioned the District Governor’s visit on August 6. The Samaritans can be contacted by phone (01324) 622066, email email@example.com or visit 19 Orchard Street, Falkirk. This is a registered charity and depends on donations. The club will meet fortnightly in the Plough Hotel, Stenhousemuir during July and August with the next meeting on August 6 at 6.45 p.m. for 7 p.m. If you are interested in joining Rotary or learning more about us contact Joe on 07849 197330 or visit our club website.
