When it comes to organising activities for older people, a Braes care home worker is officially the best in Britain.

Sandra McCallion (46) of the Haining Care Home in Maddiston was voted the best national activities co-ordinator at the National Dementia Awards at a glittering ceremony in Nottingham last week, rubbing shoulders with dementia ambassador Angela Rippon.

Judges said: “We have chosen Sandra because her warm and caring approach to ensuring activities fit the needs of all residents, including enabling residents to research their own specific interests, shone through.”

A delighted Sandra, from Shieldhill, said: “It’s a very big achievement for me and all the residents are very chuffed, which is lovely.

“I love my job and go to work with a smile every day and make sure our residents, most of them who suffer from dementia, have something worthwhile to do.”
