Looking after and supporting older people is the aim of the Royal Volunteer Service which has groups in the Falkirk area.

One of them is the Brightons RVS Club whose 10 helpers support the older generation in Braes villages like Slamannan, California and Shieldhill.

The group has 31 dedicated members who really make a difference through practical help such as organising social activities like days out and a monthly meeting where people go along for friendship, companionship and a good old fashioned blether.

Meetings vary and often welcome singers, musicians, reel-to-reel films and speakers. Members are also known to entertain themselves with a sing-song or two.

Jean Cairns said: “We try to enrich the lives of older people and their families to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age. The RVS offers people a really good opportunity to volunteer or join as a new member.”
