The daughter of former Falkirk East MSP Cathy Peattie has become an MSP herself.

Labour’s Cara Hilton was voted in by residents of Dunfermline last night as Holyrood’s newest MSP after beating the SNP’s Shirley-Anne Somerville by nearly 3000 votes.

The resignation of Bill Walker caused the Scottish Parliament by-election after he was jailed for domestic abuse. Ms Hilton said the Fife constituency “deserved better”.

The victory was a seven per cent swing for Labour with 10,275 votes to the SNP’s 7402. The Lib Dems were third and the Tories fourth. UKIP polled 908 votes in fifth place.

Turnout was 42.65 per cent.
