Scores of angry householders turned out in torrential rain to make their feelings clear about the fly infestation which has blighted their summer.

The residents, holding ‘Buzz Off!’ banners and chanting “no flies on us”, gathered outside Oran Environmental Solutions recycling centre, at Abbotsinch Industrial Estate, on Friday afternoon to demonstrate against what they feel is distinct lack of action on the part of Oran and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency to deal with the ongoing fly problem.

One of the protest organisers Maureen Downs, of nearby Duke Street, spoke about her frustrations over the issue as thunder boomed and lightning flashed over head.

She said: “You can see the strength of feeling here, with all these people coming out in the rain to get their point across. We just hope people take notice of this and Falkirk Council give their contract to a firm more able to control their waste.

“People do not believe how much the flies are affecting us, hopefully this protest will show them.”
