Most boys are never very far away from a football as they grow up.

Most boys are never very far away from a football as they grow up.

George Johnstone was a teenager when the above picture was taken with his Falkirk Technical School team-mates in 1954 and, like many of his pals, he was football-daft.

Pictured are, from left, back row, unknown, Rab Stirling, Alex Davie, George Bloy, Ian Hynds, Mr Johnstone; front row, Jim Oliver, Andy Inch, Ian Davidson, Bill Gow, Jim Robertson.

Mr Johnstone, who lived in Maddiston at the time, said: “I did a commercial course for four years at the school. At one point in this team there were five of us from Maddiston and some really good players. I was left-half.

“From this team Jim Oliver went on to play for Falkirk then Norwich, Jim Robertson played for Berwick and Alex Davie, the goalie, was capped for Scotland under-23s I think.”
