Fire fighters tackled a blaze for several hours this morning at an industrial unit in Falkirk.

The blaze broke out at around 12.50am in Smith Street in Merchiston Industrial Estate in Bainsford after a member of the public spotted smoke and raised the alarm.

Neighbours were told they may have to be evacuated as the building contained cylinders of the explosive gas acetylene, which fire fighters had to cool off. The road was closed off with diversions in place while the blaze was tackled.

It is believed no one was injured and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Police have thanked the local community for its co-operation and patience while the incident was being dealt with.

A spokesperson said: “Officers are still in attendance along with Scottish Fire and Rescue following an earlier fire at Merchiston Industrial Estate.

“The fire was reported around 12.50 this morning after a member of the public raised the alarm. All local road diversions have now been lifted with the exception to the entrance to Merchiston Industrial estate itself. We would like to thank everyone for their patience while we dealt with this incident.

“There are no reports of injury and the area has now been made same. A joint investigation is ongoing into the cause of the blaze.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 or charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
