Falkirk’s library service invited youngsters across the district to take part in
summer reading and
drawing challenges.

They then had the daunting task of selecting just 26 winners from over 600 entries.

Children aged from four to 11 took part in the annual Mythical Maze reading event organised by the Reading Agency and sponsored by Tesco Bank. They had read six books of their choice during the holidays, collecting stickers and rewards along the way.

Everyone who completed the ‘big read’ got a medal and certificate and one child from each library was selected as an overall winner and presented with a £10 book token, baseball cap and draw-string bag.

As the Mythical Maze was the theme for the reading contest, it was taken up as the theme of the annual summer competition to draw or make a mythical creature and write a short story about it. Some interesting and colourful entries were received and the best of them put on display.

Reading challenge winners were: Bonnybridge Library, Jody Dickson Davies (12); Bo’ness, Jane Nicholson (4); Denny, Arran Mackenzie (5); Falkirk, Lisa Watt (10); Grangemouth, Katie Paine (10); Larbert, Michelle Yu (9); Meadowbank, Katie Smith (8); Slamannan, Lily Kromer (9).

This summer’s competition winners were: Bonnybridge Library, Emma Baigre (6), Kerrie Adam (8); Bo’ness, Sam McGrow (6), Eve Legge (11); Denny, Abigail Gillespie (5), Nikita Nisbet (9); Falkirk, Edwin Walker (8), John Walker (6); Grangemouth, Nicole Lorentson (5), Sheryl Cochrane (10); Larbert, Joel Ramsay (6), Anna Marr (8); Meadowbank, Vivienne Strain (5), Katie Byrne (9); Mobile, Tiree Sedgewick-Stewart (5), Hollie Alldred (8); Slamannan, Martha Strand (7), Rose Tyrrell (5).
