A Falkirk man who stabbed and killed a prostitute and raped two others next to her dead body has been jailed for life.

Dad-of-two Steven Mathieson was told he must serve 22 years in prison before being considered for parole for what the judge described as his “terrible and senseless crimes”.

Mathieson (38), who was high on cocaine, stabbed single mum Luciana Maurer 44 times in a frenzied and unprovoked attack in his own home.

He then called two more vice girls to his Springfield Drive house - and brutally raped them repeatedly.

The two Eastern European women eventually managed to flee naked into the street as he chased them with knives.

Mathieson’s wife was on a works night out and his young son was asleep in the next room when he committed the horrific crimes on December 4 last year.

At the High Court in Livingston today (Thursday), car salesman Mathieson sobbed loudly as his sentence was passed.

Judge Lord Bannatyne said: “This is an appalling case. The crimes you have committed are truly dreadful.

“By your actions, a young woman has lost her life.

“You contacted this young woman and had her come to your home.

“Within a very short time of her arrival, you subjected her to a sustained and brutal attack.

“You stabbed this defenceless young woman on approximately 44 occasions.

“As you subjected her to this attack, she must have been terrified.”

He went on: “You had also invited two other young women to your house.

“When they arrived, you subjected them to a sustained, degrading and terrifying attack, involving their being repeatedly raped.

“Throughout this attack they must have feared for their lives.

“A particularly appalling part of the attack on these women was that the initial part of it took place in the bedroom where the body of the deceased was lying.

“Your actings can only be described as wholly depraved.”

In addition to the life sentence, the judge told Mathieson his name would remain on the sex offenders’ register for an indefinite period.
