A former Falkirk High School pupil is in line for the top job with Edinburgh City Council.
Andrew Kerr (56) has been announced as the preferred candidate for the post of chief executive with the local authority.
If his appointment is ratified by councillors on May 28 he will oversee an annual budget of £949 million and 18,600 employees.
The new chief executive will replace Dame Sue Bruce who retires in October after five years in post.
Mr Kerr, a married father of three, currently holds a similar post with Cornwall Council.
His 33 year public sector career began with Falkirk District Council in 1982 when he was a duty manager at Grangemouth Sports Complex.
He also managed the nearby Grangemouth Stadium which was a well known location to him as he was a successful athlete, representing Great Britain in the 400m.
Mr Kerr also worked for councils in Birmingham, North Tyneside and Cardiff.
The Edinburgh post has a reported salary of £160,000.
