The Falkirk Herald’s chief photographer is in the running for a top award.
Michael Gillen has been shortlisted in the weekly newspaper photographer of the year category in the Regional Press Awards.
Organised by the Society of Editors, they celebrate the best of British regional newspaper journalism in 2011.
His successful entry was three photographs published in The Falkirk Herald last year. They are from the Action Against Agrofuels demonstration at Grangemouth Docks last May; the hug Hayley Boyle (3), granddaughter of Lord Lieutenant Marjory McLachlan, gave HM Queen when Forth Valley Royal Hospital opened in July; and 18-month-old John Cunningham at the Bantaskine Estate garden allotments, also in July.
Chairman of the judges Paul Horrocks said: “Panels of independent judges have pored over more than 700 entries to produce the shortlists. The entries demonstrated the amazing quality of journalistic effort that is still being produced in these challenging times for the whole of the media and regional and local papers in particular.”
The winners will be named in London on May 25.
