At 63, most people are thinking about retiring from work and taking it easy. But not Arthur McCaffery.

The Denny grandad has just graduated from the Open University with a prestigious BSc in Engineering and Business Studies after six years of study while working full-time and, for six months, battling cancer.

An engineer, Arthur works at WGM Engineering in Glasgow training apprentices. But the degree is his first formal qualification.

He said: “I wanted to do it just to prove to myself that I could. It was for my own satisfaction.

“My wife Anne’s been very supportive.

“She’s been the long suffering wife left to sit downstairs alone while I went upstairs to do my work.

“It was quite challenging, especially at the start, and it’s been a long time of coming in from work, having my dinner and then studying for a few hours a night.”

Now, after receiving “umpteen cards and best wishes” from friends and family, Arthur’s decided that his school days are over.

He added: “I had a cancer scare in November. At the time I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to finish my course.

“I was going through chemotherapy, and was not really up to the job.

“But in May, I got the all clear, so now I’ve decided to enjoy life as much as I can.”
