Larbert Old Playgroup is for children aged two or over. It runs on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 9.30-11.25 a.m, in the church hall at Larbert Old Church. Spaces are currently available on a Tuesday with a waiting list in place for Mondays and Wednesdays. Sessions are run by qualified play leaders, cost is £3.50 including snack. Lodge Carron 139 held a committee meeting on February 17 at which £1000 was agreed to be donated to several local charities. The money had been raised at Lodge events over the last few months. The presentation of the donations to the charities will take place in the Lodge on Monday, March 10 at 7 p.m.
President Jean Geddes welcomed members and visitor Christine Bell to a meeting of the Rotary Club of Vale of Carron at the Plough Hotel, Stenhousemuir. The first item of the evening was the induction of Giuseppe (Joe) Nicoletti as a Rotarian. The president recalled that Joe was already well known to the club as he had helped greatly with the Santa Sleigh collections in December. After a meal Rotarian Don Murray introduced Christine Bell, project officer with Communities Along The Carron Association (CATCA), who gave an insight into her role. The group of volunteers is committed to the regeneration of the River Carron, its 16 communities and adjacent land. Constituted in March 2010, CATCA identified 31 projects which would reflect the concerns of these communities. They covered water quality, wildlife, fly tipping, paths, heritage projects and much more. For further information visit www.catca.org.uk. The Dobbie Hall car boot sale takes place every Wednesday from 8.30 a.m. - noon and pitches cost £6 for one and £9 for two. Tables are available for anyone wishing to make some money from unwanted items and all money raised benefits the Hall Trust. For hall and pitch bookings call (01324) 570450.
A meeting of the above takes place every Friday in Larbert Old Church Hall at 8 p.m. The meetings allow people to share experiences and gain advice on coping with family members suffering from alcoholism. Larbert East Playgroup has vacancies for new members. The playgroup is for children of two years six months and upwards and runs on Tuesday through to Friday at Larbert East Church from 9.20-11 a.m. There is also a Monday Twos club from 9.30-11 a.m. and a toddlers group goes ahead on a Wednesday from 9.30-11 a.m. Anyone interested in joining any of these groups will be welcomed at the church at the above times.

The above group at Larbert Pentecostal Church in Broomage Avenue continues every Thursday. The facility is for 0 to 3-year-olds and has a dedicated baby corner. The 89th Larbert Scout Group is holding a fund raising ceilidh in Carronshore Social Club on Saturday, March 8 at 7.30 p.m. Tickets, priced £4, and further information is available from Elizabeth Dick on (01324) 556373. The 89th is an amalgamation of the 35th and 54th groups and organisers would be delighted to see former members of those groups at the event to renew friendships.
Most tickets for this Saturday’s cabaret at Stenhousemuir Bowling Club have been snapped up, but the advice is to enquire at the bar for any returns. The event features top funnyman Dean Park and vocalist Karen Logan. The cabaret follows the bingo session around 9 p.m. and David Taylor will fill the gaps with appropriate music at the Church Street premises.

Larbert Churches Youth Trust continue to hold a monthly prayer breakfast in support of its work and schools’ worker, Mike Glass, on the first Saturday of each month. The next will be on Saturday, March 1 in Falkirk Free Church at 9 a.m. All welcome.

On February 18, David Grant, retired engineer for The Forth Bridge, gave 30 members of the Larbert & Stenhousemuir Probus Club a presentation on his lifelong passion with the iconic stucture. The next meeting is at 2 p.m. on March 4 at Larbert Bowling Club. Nora Fitzcharles from the Dunblane/Stirling Beekeepers Association will give a presentation. Tickets for the 40th anniversary lunch will also be on sale.
President Martin Nicol welcomed members to last Wednesday’s meeting at Carmuirs Golf Club. After dinner, Andrew Gillespie introduced local historian Brian Watters who delivered a presentation entitled ‘Old Larbert and Stenhousemuir’. Brian started his presentation by showing a map of the original Larbert Parish dating from 1817 and then proceeded to take Rotarians on a walk through time highlighting many of the village landmarks and buildings, each of which carried their own story. Brian’s photographs illustrated his talk and highlighted the rich cultural heritage that has emanated from the local area. After what was both an informative and enjoyable evening, Martin Scott gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the club. Next week’s speaker is Ian Scott.
