Doors open 6.45 p.m. During the summer and autumn of 1884, Britain was thrown into political crisis, as the growing movement for votes for working class men clashed with the Conservative Party and the House of Lords over the extension of the franchise. Up and down the country - but in particular in Scotland - hundreds of demonstrations took place in an attempt to force the Lords’ hand. In Falkirk and the surrounding villages, including Denny, Bonnybridge and Larbert, thousands of men and women held meetings, marched and protested. Focussing on these local responses, and using objects which have survived in Scottish museum collections, including Callendar House. Mark Nixon will tell the story of these demonstrators and the movement of which they were a part, showing how they and others involved in the movement influenced the development of modern politics.
