A family man who murdered a call girl and raped two others as his son slept in the next room was described as a “quiet guy” by neighbours.

Car salesman Steven Mathieson (38), a dad-of-two, last Thursday pled guilty to killing 24-year-old Luciana Maurer from Romania – stabbing her 44 times – after luring her to his Springfield Drive home for sex.

His unsuspecting partner of 10 years, Susanne Thogersen, was on a night out.

High on cocaine, he raped two other escorts at knifepoint as Ms Maurer’s corpse lay on a double bed.

He had called a sex line and arranged for the women, aged 22 and 26, to come to his house.

However, they managed to escape his clutches and, naked, raised the alarm at around 12.30 a.m.

They were helped by a woman who lives nearby and works in the Rosebank Beefeater restaurant. Staff there say she was “too shaken up” to make her work the next day.

Neighbours this week spoke of their shock at the drug-fuelled orgy of violence .

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “I didn’t know the man but I saw him plenty of times to say hello. He was just a quiet guy who kept himself to himself. I don’t think many people round here knew him well.

“There’s no way anyone would have thought he was into the likes of cocaine and prostitutes, but it just goes to show that anyone is capable of something like this.”

Another neighbour, who also wanted to remain anonymous, expressed the community’s concern for Mathieson’s devastated family.

She said: “It’s the boys and Susanne everyone is feeling for. They are innocent victims in all this as well and they are being very brave, well, on the face of it anyway.”

The killing took place on December 4 last year.

COURT CASE

The High Court in Glasgow heard last week how a dad-of-two turned into a crazed killer and rapist in his family home in Falkirk.

Steven Mathieson, an apparently nondescript car salesman with Arnold Clark, spent the daytime of December 4 last year shopping and having a meal with his family.

But that night he stabbed a prostitute 44 times and then raped two others next to her dead body - all while his four-year-old son lay sleeping in the next room.

After killing Romanian Luciana Maurer (24) he sent a text to his partner, who was enjoying a work night out, saying: “Sorry xx”.

He then forced the other two call girls, who had arrived at his home at around 11.55 p.m., to dance for him naked before raping them next to the corpse.

The court heard Miss Maurer had defensive-type injuries which suggested she had tried to fight off Mathieson’s frenzied attack.

When his next two victims arrived at his house, Mathieson was casually sitting on his couch in the living room.

He then led them upstairs where Miss Maurer’s body lay.

Prosecutor Jane Farquharson said: “Mathieson went into the bedroom first. He put on the light and hung back at the door while the women walked in.

“As soon as they entered the bedroom, they saw the deceased, lying on her back and on top of the double bed.”

Mathieson then grabbed two knives from a set of drawers before blocking the door.

Both women froze in terror at what was happening.

One begged Mathieson to let them go but he grabbed their mobile phones and flung them away.

He coldly tormented the women by stroking them with the knives, then threatened to kill them if they did not bow to his sick demands.

Miss Farquharson added: “He told both to remove their clothing and to dance for him. In fear of what he might do and, with the body of the deceased lying on the bed in front of them, each did as they were told.”

Mathieson then ordered the “petrified” women to go downstairs where he continued to humiliate and rape them.

Miss Farquharson said: “Over the course of the assault in the living room, he told them that his son was asleep in the bedroom upstairs.

“He appeared to have an awareness of what he had done, advising both – ‘I’m going to be many years in prison because I killed that girl. I’ve done this to show my wife something’.”

When Mathieson’ attention was distracted the women raced for the door and escaped into the street, where they sought help at a nearby flat. Following their escape Mathieson called emergency services and told the operator: “I’ve been high on drugs and I’ve killed a prostitute.

“Tell the officers I am not aggressive. I’m sitting on the couch. I had two other girls, but I’ve let them go.”

Mathieson was sitting in his living room when police arrived and he got down on his knees and held out his hands for officers to arrest him.

Shortly after 2 a.m. his partner, Susanne Thogersen, who had no idea what had happened, arrived to find the horror inside her home and became “hysterical”.

The court heard that Mathieson had built up a “large” drug debt, attended Cocaine Anonymous, but had managed to keep his taste for phone sex lines a secret from his partner.

Judge Lord Bannatyne remanded Mathieson in custody and deferred sentencing until May 7 in Livingston. He faces a life sentence.
