Police have issued a warning.

A woman suffered a terrifying ordeal when a thief tried to steal her handbag as she returned home from a village meeting.

The attempted robbery took place around 9.15pm last night as the victim was walking home from a meeting at Shieldhill Primary School.

As she walked through the path between Main Street and Pirleyhill Drive a man approached and pushed her.

When she fell to the ground he attempted to take her handbag but was unsuccessful.

He then ran off in the direction of Pirleyhill Drive.

The woman was uninjured but badly shaken as a result of the attack.

Police are now hunting for the man who is described as white and of slim build. He is around 18-20 years old, about 5ft 10ins tall and clean-shaven.

He was wearing a dark hoodie with the hood up and pulled tight, along with dark coloured tracksuits bottoms with three stripes – possibly Adidas – and bright white trainers.

Detective Inspector Kenneth McAndrew said: “This was a frightening attack on a lone woman, who was returning home from a community meeting.

“We are now appealing for any information regarding this incident. Anyone who was in the area at the time, and recognises the suspect description, is asked to contact us immediately.”
