It was a time for celebration and 2nd Torwood Scout Group were well prepared for their 100th anniversary, marking their centenary in style.
A dinner in the Park Hotel on Saturday was attended by members past and present but there was no sign of any generation gap as everyone enjoyed the nostalgic atmosphere and sharing stories of their history.
Top table guests included Sandy Jack, Mark Wallace, Rev John Jenkinson, Gordon Niven and Chairman Gordon Lang.
The celebration programme also included a Church Service, a display of scouting with memorabilia and photographs, and the production of an impressive brochure, DVD and CD documenting the 100 year history of the Group.
A commemorative badge and woggle is being given to every member to mark this milestone anniversary and souvenir pens and trolley coin key rings have been produced.
It was on January 11, 1913 that the first 12 boys were invested, heralding the establishment of Torwood Scouts but this was after the way had been prepared with their registration in November of the previous year.
The commemorative brochure ‘100 Glorious Years’ presents a great record of their scouting history with information about how it all began and the people who have brought the Group through 100 years. There is a list of all the leaders, along with stories of activities over the years backed up with photographs, and up-to-date reports by the leaders of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
There is also a positive message for the future which said: “Torwood are poised to go into the future with high expectations. Although the last century has seen many changes in age groups, uniforms and training, the fundamentals of Scouting have been maintained and still engage young people, in spite of many competing attractions.”
Bear Grylls, Chief Scout, sent a personal message which said: “I send my best wishes to all members of 2nd Forth Region (Torwood) Scout Group past and present and offer my heartiest congratulations on this great occasion in your Scouting histoty as you celebrate 100 years. With such a proud record, I know that Scouting in the Group will continue to go from strength to strength. What a great Scouting example you guys are.”
