A woman is going for gold with the trip of a lifetime in Armenia later this year.

In this instance GOLD stands for Guiding Overseas Linked with Development, and Emma Guthrie is looking forward to travelling with five other Girlguiding UK members on what should be an adventure to remember.

Emma (21) is a member and leader of 1st Braes Senior Section and is training to be a lawyer. She is already working hard to raise funds ahead of her trip with a series of events in the community, including local schools.

Her trip to Armenia takes place this summer and will involve a range of vital community development projects.

The GOLD project is open to Girlguiding UK members between 17 and 30 years since its inception 21 years ago.

In the past, participants have travelled as far afield as Honduras, Madagascar, Russia, South Africa and Thailand and Emma is delighted that she has been given the opportunity to visit Armenia.

She explained: “I love travelling, seeing different cultures and meeting new people. I have been lucky enough to travel to quite a few countries but have always wanted to go on a trip which allows me to give something back to the community I am visiting.

“In particular I wanted to go on a trip through Girlguiding UK because I know what an amazing organisation it is. It has given me so many experiences and opportunities.

“I am really pleased to be part of a team helping to give others the chance to be a member of this fantastic organisation in other areas of the world.”

Girlguiding runs Rainbows for girls age five to seven, Brownies for seven to ten years, Guides for 10 to 14 years, and the Senior Section is for girls from 14 to 25 years. The activities enable girls and young women to develp their potential whatever their ability or background, offering new opportunities to a broad diversity of communities through a network of more than 63,000 trained volunteer leaders.

Girlguiding UK is part of a worldwide movement of approximately 10 million girls and young women in 145 countries.
