Top award for Stenhousemuir butcher’s upper crust pie

Light, flaky, buttery and really tender are the perfect ingredients for a steak pie and a Stenhousemuir butcher has ticked all the boxes say judges.

R Brown & Son picked up a prestigious Silver Award at the 2015 Scottish Craft Butchers Steak Pie Evaluation at Perth College for their steak and sausage pie.

The local butcher’s, based in Hallam Road, pie was chosen as one of the top in the country out of 150 entries from across Scotland by an esteemed judging panel experts, cooks and interested consumers which included celebrity chef Mark Heirs.

The pies were judged on their appearance, flavour, filling and appeal.

Laurent Vernet, head of marketing with Quality Meat Scotland, which runs the Scotch Butchers Club, sponsors of the Steak Pie Evaluation, said: “Scotland’s beef is world-renowned thanks to its outstanding quality and exceptional taste. It’s also an extremely versatile product which can be used to make fantastic modern recipes as well as high quality products such as steak pie.

“These awards offer a fantastic opportunity to see the energy, enthusiasm and skill our butchers have. Their commitment to producing top quality beef products points to a bright future for the industry.”

Steven Brown, whose family has run the business since 1968, was delighted to pick up the award and said it showed that butchers in the district are the upper crust of the industry.

He said: “I grew up in this shop and have worked here since I was at school so I’m really proud we have been given this recognition from a lot of entries in the awards.

“There are a lot of good butchers in this area and I think we all push each other to keep moving forward and trying things that our customers like.”
