Pupils at a district school are enjoying an unexpected day off after its heating system failed.

Carron Primary informed parents and carers at 8.30 a.m. this morning that it would not be opening as it had no heating or hot water.

The closure was caused by a wider disruption to gas supplies in the Alloa Road area of Carron and Stenhousemuir, with around 150 homes affected.

Utility company SGN said the problem was caused by water entering gas pipes and its engineers are working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

Water was still being pumped from the system at 9 a.m. today. The company has yet to locate the source of the leak.

SGN has set up an incident centre at Tryst Community Centre in Park Drive, Stenhousemuir, where electronic cooking devices can be obtained.

A spokesman for Falkirk Council said: “Unfortunately, Carron Primary School had to close today as a result of an issue with the gas main serving the wider area.

“We understand that SGN are currently working to identify the source of the problem.”
